D5 RINs cover advanced biofuels other than biomass-based diesel and cellulosic — for example sugarcane ethanol and naphtha from biomass — under the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard. The D5 category sits between D6 (conventional) and D4 (biomass-based diesel) in the program nesting hierarchy. D5 RINs may satisfy D5 obligations or be retired downward into D6.
